No Avatar vs Undetermined: What Each Avatar Check Result Means
No avatar and undetermined are different avatar check results, and neither proves an account is missing. Learn how to read, store and act on each.

An explainer on the difference between a no-avatar result and an undetermined result, and why neither is a verdict on the account.
No avatar and undetermined are different outcomes. No avatar means the check completed and no public picture was returned. Undetermined means the check could not produce an answer, for example because the identifier was invalid or the lookup failed. Neither result shows that an account does not exist. Treat them as separate categories in your data, record the check date, and avoid turning either into a conclusion about the person behind the identifier.
No avatar: a completed check with no public picture
A no-avatar result is an answer. The check ran, and the source showed no public picture at that moment. There are several ordinary reasons this can happen: the user never added a picture, chose a privacy setting that hides it, or the source shows only a default placeholder.
WhatsApp, for instance, offers profile photo visibility choices of everyone, contacts only or nobody, and a hidden photo appears to others as a grey placeholder, so a missing picture often reflects a privacy choice rather than anything about the account.
Because the check completed, it is billable like any other completed check. For your records, treat it as information about public visibility at one point in time, and avoid describing the contact as having no account.
Undetermined: the check did not produce an answer
An undetermined outcome means the check was invalid, inconclusive or failed. In synchronous multi results, an entry flagged as not produced covers this case. It is not a negative verdict about the account or the avatar.
Common causes you can fix on your side include malformed identifiers, phone numbers with plus signs or spaces where country-coded digits are expected, and email addresses on domains that avatar checks do not cover. Telegram, Viber, MAX, LINE and Zalo are bulk-only, so sending them to a realtime route will not produce a useful answer either.
When a batch shows many undetermined rows, clean the list and retry a small sample before rerunning the full set.
Compare the two outcomes side by side
| Question | No avatar | Undetermined |
|---|---|---|
| Did the check complete? | Yes | No answer produced |
| What it tells you | No public picture was returned | Nothing about the avatar |
| Does it prove the account is missing? | No | No |
| Useful next step | Keep as a dated observation | Fix the input and retry |
Image profile analysis follows the same logic. A completed result with unknown attributes, or a picture of something that is not a person, is still a determined answer. An unreadable image or a service error is a failure instead and is not treated as a result.
In bulk email files, an empty picture link should not be read as proof that no avatar exists.
Store and use results responsibly
Use separate values for found, no avatar and undetermined rather than collapsing them into a yes-or-no field. Save the source, the check date and the product used, since columns and behavior differ between products.
Good uses include prioritizing which records to review manually and deciding which identifiers need cleanup. Poor uses include declaring an account fake, treating a hidden picture as suspicious, or making decisions about a person based on a missing picture.
A short note in your data dictionary stating that avatar outcomes are public-visibility observations will prevent most misreadings by downstream teams.
FAQ
Does no avatar mean the account does not exist?
No. It means no public picture was returned. Users may have no picture or may restrict who can see it, and the account can exist either way.
Should undetermined results be retried?
Usually after checking the input. Fix formatting, remove unsupported domains and confirm the source is available on the route you used, then retry a small sample before a full rerun.
Are no-avatar results billable?
A completed check that found no avatar is a determined answer and counts as completed. Failures and unreadable inputs are handled differently, so check the current documentation for billing details.
